Spring Is In The Air

I love painting from life. It gets me out of my studio, enjoying new environments, and challenges me to paint differently than I do on my studio pieces. Often, when painting from life, I am much more direct and aggressive because I am in time constraints.

I joined CAW studio in Sacramento yesterday. It was inspiring to be around other working artist using different mediums; among them a pastel and watercolor artists. The model sat for three hours, taking breaks every 20 minutes. This process is great because it allows me to step back from the piece every 20 minutes and evaluate my next step. I also learned from those around me watching other artists use different approaches, techniques and styles, to create their work.

I love the atmosphere of live painting sessions. It was easy to get into a groove with the soft jazz playing in the background, a beautiful model and bright colored flowers surrounding her. During this session I worked on color tones and brush quality leaving some edges more expressive and soft.

I titled this piece "Life of Spring," which is symbolic for all of us - new life, new beginning, the cold of winter slips away and incandescent beauty comes and replaces the bleakness. Spring is a promise of Hope and Peace that resurrects each year.
