CAC Winter Symposium

I drove to SF a few weekends ago to attend the California Art Club Winter Symposium. It was an inspiring weekend of demos, art talks, and business development. I went away feeling 'filled up.'

Craig Nelson, Oil Painter and Director of Fine Arts at AAU, gave figurative demos through out the weekend.

This demo was about quick studies. Craig was one of my instructors at AAU so it was fun to learn from him again.

Artist Jesse Powell, of Carmel CA, showed us how he takes a color study and paints it larger in his studio. I always love watching other artists paint. Every painter has different approaches, techniques, process and color palettes. Seeing artists paint live can inspire me to try new approaches or just spark inspiration in general.

And of course a highlight of the weekend was getting to hear and see renowned Kevin Macpherson talk about his life, career, and give a painting demo. He was brilliant and charming - I even got to shake his hand. :)

CAC Painting Retreat - Tahoe

California Art Club, Greater Sacramento Sierra Chapter hosted its first annual painting retreat. It was a chance for artists to join together for a weekend in the gorgeous Tahoe outdoors - talk, share inspiration and ideas, and paint.

It was an incredible experience to get away and focus on plein air for the weekend. We often painted together and could stop and look at each others work through out the day. We painted mountain vistas, lakes, ponds, gorge, and the Truckee River. The diversity in Tahoe made it an extraordinary  opportunity to paint a variety through out the weekend.

Sunday's View - Winding, cold and absolutely gorgeous!

Sunday's View - Winding, cold and absolutely gorgeous!

Its hard to choose what spot was my favorite to paint. I think it may have been on Sunday when we painted the rocky terrain overlooking Lake Donner. The view came at a price as I had to climb a half mile up boulders with my heavy gear to find the perfect spot. It was breathtaking in more ways than one... The view included beautiful solid mountain stones with wind blown trees and receding mountains in the background. The overcast day also added to the fun and challenge, making it my favorite spot from the weekend.
