Kids at play have been a theme in my work for a few years now, especially showing up in the 1950s series. While reading and talking to others about the 50s I am always confronted with a nostalgic innocence surrounding childhood. Was the world more peaceful 60 years ago? What changed so drastically that caused a generation to look back and covet "the good ole days?" I think these questions have many answers and are quite complex, however I believe there was a simplicity, spirit of life and adventure, and optimism in the 50s that I find beautiful and try to emulate in my work.
I found some photos documenting the stages of my painting Pick Up Sticks. This will give you a good idea of what kind of stages a painting goes through to get to completion.
Not only did I have a great time looking at the beautiful cars, eating some yummy food and people watching, but I got a lot of amazing photo references to work from.
I was honored that they chose one of my paintings for this years poster and program.
This years event will take place May 17-18, 2013 at Monterey Fairgrounds. I am excited to attend again. I think I may even take my paint box and do some plein air painting this year. Check out the event at: http://www.montereyrockrod.com. I hope to see you there!
