Creating the Vineyard Series

Take a look at my painting process and get an 'insiders' look into my studio.

I've been painting on wine barrels so it takes a little prep to get my surface ready. Thankfully AJ has been helping me take the barrels apart and rebuild them the size I want.

Each painting takes a lot of planning and layers of paint. I often combine multiple images to create dynamic panoramic views. These paintings are based off of real places, but I often have to change the setting a bit to fit the format of my painting. I like the freedom I have to make these changes. I am more interested in recreating the beauty of wine country than representing a specific place.

After I am done painting them, I apply a few layers of varnish so they're nice and shiny.

AJ and I like to drive to wine country and take photo references. Each wine region has its own beauty and feel. We're lucky to be so close to a few different ones. Behind us is Helwig Vineyards in Amador County.

Ficklin Wilcox Reception

Receptions are always a lot of fun. As an artist the intensity leading up to a show is high! So when all the work is hung, prints and cards complete, and its finally your turn to sip and mingle with friends and clients…. well that is a great feeling. And that is how it was this weekend at Ficklin-Wilcox. I had a wonderful reception Thursday Night followed by another fun and vibrant show for 2nd Saturday. The musicians were extremely talented and a joy to listen to, the port was flowing and delicious as always, and I was putting the finishing touches on a painting that was to be raffled off later that night to one lucky winner!

I was adding some finishing strokes to the raffle piece Sat. Night. Valued at $1500.00, folks could purchase tickets for $10.00 and by the end of the reception Sat. Night, someone would be getting their own Napa inspired vineyard painting.

This show holds over 15 original oil paintings in various sizes. All pieces are inspired by the California Wine Culture. Since moving to CA over 4 years ago, I have enjoyed tasting wine from different regions across the state. It is fun to learn and taste the variety and creativity the winemakers put into their wines. Many wonderful afternoons were spent driving through wine country, looking at the beautiful rows of vines spanning over the mountain sides, and of course tasting ports and wines. If your into wine, ports, vineyard landscapes, or CA landscapes in general you won't want to miss this show. Showing from March 6- Early April. Ficklin will pour you a little port for your tastebuds to enjoy as you look at the original oil paintings. (Prints, greeting cards, and softcover books also available for sale)
